Varan was your typical silly "big rubber monster" movie and naturally it was fun as a kid to watch toy cars and toy buildings get stomped and tromped, but...FIRST SPACESHIP ON VENUS blew my mind! I was already something of a space geek kid, but FIRST SPACESHIP showed me things I had never seen before...and in color on a big screen! This film haunted me for years until I finally saw it again on late-night TV years later (remember, we didn't have cable, VCRs or DVDs in the 1960s), and even on a black and white TV screen, it was a magical vision to see. I still like this movie a lot, but it just can't quite match my pre-teen memories of it. The actors are credible, as is the technical storyline, given our knowledge of Venus in 1960. The moral of the picture (nuclear weapons - bad; space travel - good) intrudes on the action near the end, causing the movie to stumble a bit. The major shortcomings of the movie are the clumsy translation and dubbing. It's clear that the people in charge of that didn't have a good handle on the English language with respect to translation, cadence, timing and inflection.
